Mi’kmaw Conservation Group At Work In Communities

2016 – 2017

MCG is committed to being a technical resource to Mi’kmaw Communities. The projects MCG seeks funding for, and participate in, are guided by an Advisory Board made up of Fisheries Managers, Community stakeholders and Elders. Currently MCG is working on the following projects:

  • Sipekne’katik Habitat Restoration
  • Mi’kmaw Citizen Science: Building Capacity for a Greener Future
  • Clean Water, Healthy Food: Ecosystem Monitoring by Mi’kmaw Communities in Heavily Agricultural Watersheds in Mi’kma’ki
  • Preparing Mi’kmaw Communities Water Utilities for Climate Change
  • Smalls River Restoration
  • Assessment and Remediation of Migration Barriers for Atlantic Salmon in the Stewiacke Watershed
  • Smolt Wheel (Rotary Screw Trap) in the Stewiacke River
  • Inner Bay of Fundy Planning Group – Planning of Recovery Activities
  • Adult Salmon Releases – Stewiacke and Salmon Rivers
  • Fry Releases – Stewiacke River
  • Adult Fish Counts via Snorkel Surveys – Big Salmon River(NB) and upcoming in the Gulf Region
  • Electrofishing and other monitoring activities for juveniles
  • Southern Uplands Atlantic Salmon Working Group
  • Marine Emergency Response Planning 
  • Species at Risk Files 
  • Sturgeon Monitoring in the Petitcodiac
